Private individual guitar lessons are available, and are taught in a dedicated music room with recording capabilities from Jordan's home in Southampton. Jordan is a fully accredited member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors, and is CRB checked (January 2010).

All levels of guitarist are welcomed, and lessons can be tailored to suit either acoustic guitar, electric guitar, or both. Teaching material is firmly tailored to suit the goals and needs of each individual student. References from past and existing students are available upon request.

In addition to one-on-one sessions, short video lessons can be made after a lesson has taken place to capture key topics that have been covered, and emailed to the student so they can watch (and re-watch) the material presented. Cancellation policy: Please provide a minimum of 48-hours notice should a lesson need to be cancelled or re-arranged. Due to constant demand for lessons there are often other students that could take the booking given enough time. A cancellation of less than 48 hours results in a gap that is unable to be filled. If the required notice is not given, the full lesson fee is charged. By booking lessons the student is reserving teaching time and thereby agreeing to the cancellation policy.

Guitar Teaching FAQ:

Do you have any spaces available for new students at the moment?
This changes from week to week, so it’s always best to get in contact via phone or email to check first hand.

Where do you teach from?
I teach from my home in central Southampton (SO14).

Do you teach each student every week, or every other week?
I’m happy to do either, whichever suits the student best. In my experience children benefit from lessons every week, whereas adults tend to favour one lesson every two weeks, as this gives more time between lessons for new material and ideas to be practised.

Do you teach children?
Yes, I teach children and am fully CRB checked. Lessons for children are 30 minutes in duration, as opposed to an hour for adults.

Do you travel to students homes?
This is not a service that I currently offer. Doing so would make scheduling lessons much harder, and the main benefit of teaching from my studio is the access to materials and recording facilities.

Do I need my own guitar?
Ideally, yes. At least 95% of student progress is made between lessons, so having a guitar to practise on between lessons is pretty much essential. If for any reason your guitar is unavailable for a given lesson, I have some that can be used. If you are currently looking for a new guitar, I can highly recommend The Guitar Store in Southampton, located just by the central train station.

My guitar needs new strings and/or a setup. Can you help?
I certainly can. I’m more than happy to supply and fit new strings for a small charge – I buy strings in bulk, so can usually offer cheaper prices than shops. Guitar setup work is also available upon request.

Do I need to be able to read music?
No. If you’re able to read music it can be a great asset and open up a world of material otherwise inaccessible to guitarists, but it’s not a pre-requisite for lessons – nor is it something I enforce upon students. A knowledge of how to read guitar tablature is useful, or will be taught if starting from scratch.

Will the lessons be tailored to me, or does everyone learn the same material?
If starting as a beginner, there are certain fundamental techniques/chords/scales that are useful for everyone to learn. That said, I aim to get each student working towards their own personal goals as soon as possible, and welcome input in the form of favourite bands, songs, or genres. WIth this information I can tailor lessons to each student while incorporating progressive techniques, theory, and repertoire to keep the student moving forward.

Do you teach electric or acoustic guitar?
Both! I enjoy playing and teaching acoustic and electric guitar in equal measure, and usually have a fairly even split of students focusing on each. I’d always encourage students not to pigeon-hole themselves into one of the other – most of your favourite acoustic players can usually rip out a pretty mean electric solo too, and vice versa! 

Do you charge for missed lessons?
If given less than 48 hours notice, the full charge of the lesson is required.

Do you offer discount for block-bookings?
No. In my experience this has only been asked by people buying lessons for someone else as a present. In this case, I wouldn’t want for the student to feel ‘tied-in’ to a fixed number of lessons.
